TOURS
The following are our two options for the bus tour on July 12 (Thursday):
Westerville: The Hanby Legacy Tour
Come explore the stream of the United Brethren Church that had a life-shaping impact on the Ohio community of Westerville that that has helped shape today's Methodism and influence the world.
Starting with Bishop William Hanby's work establishing Otterbein University in 1847 the United Brethren Church shaped the flow of lives academically, culturally and spiritually. Bishop Hanby's son, Benjamin composed over 80 songs, popular, like Up on the Housetop and Darling Nelly Gray as well as hymns still sung by choirs and found in hymnals today.
Come explore with us the Hanby Home, the Otterbein Archives where we'll meet Archivist Stephen Grinch; also on the tour is a visit to historic Church of the Master where we'll learn about its history and enjoy a sing-along of Hanby music. Lunch will be at Church of the Messiah, which is celebrating 200 years of ministry; our luncheon speaker, Beth Weinhardt will discuss the Anti-Saloon League founded in Westerville and the role of the Church and the Hanby influence in promoting Temperance.
While transportation will be provided from site to site, all the sites are within a block of one another making for easy walking for those interested.
More details you need to know:
We'll leave the hotel at 8 am for the approximate 90-minute bus ride to Westerville. Transportation on site will be provided. The Hanby House is small (no elevator) so our group will be divided into touring groups and will rotate from site to site as a group. We'll all have lunch together and will have a supper stop at Der Dutchman restaurant (pay your own way) on the return trip to Dayton.
Cost: $30.00. We must have your tour registration no later than June 15, 2018. The tour will be cancelled if the minimum group size is not reached. Have more questions? Contact: Jim Allen at the Hanby House, 614-891-6289, hanbyhouse@yahoo.com or Dave Boling, 614-832-1217, dwboling@gmail.com.
